Finishing Touches for Your Garage Project, Part 1

January 30, 2020 by Rick Scully

2 car garage willowdale showcase - 4 post hydraulic car lift, garage cabinets, polyaspartic garage flooring, overhead platform storage, tire storage, satinless steel work station, flatscreen tv fixture

Previous articles have addressed the refinishing of your garage floor.  We covered everything from the fundamental steps required for proper floor preparation to the application of your new floor covering. Next, you will want to consider what is commonly referred to as the finishing touches. In this case, finishing touches can be separated into three key areas: drywall, painting and lighting.

Drywall is an established garage wall covering material found on both existing and newly constructed homes.  Unfortunately, in many cases the drywall installation is only about fifty percent finished.  That is, when the home builder was done with the garage, he may have left the drywall both unsanded and unpainted.  Now understand this is a common practice and totally above board.  The builder is simply following the building code and completing what he needs to do to complete the job.

Yet unfinished drywall is not just found in newer homes.  Actually, there are quite a few existing homes out there where the garage hasn’t actually been touched since the builder left.  That’s quite common, and now that you have decided to move forward and upgrade your garage you can be sure it’s done right, the way you want.

You see, the time you have set aside to refinish your garage floor gives you the perfect opportunity to take care of that drywall.  Here are a couple of options for you to consider.  First, imagine the scenario where the drywall is already installed and thoroughly covering your garage walls.  With this scenario, the existing drywall might only need to be sanded and painted.  Also, there may be a few areas where the existing drywall needs to be patched or repaired and then re-mudded. “Remudding” is just contractor speak for applying new joint compound to the seams between the drywall sections.  Remember, the point of the “mudding” process is to make the joints invisible so that your wall looks smooth and uniform.  Of course, at this point you will want to choose a paint color complimentary to your home exterior and garage floor covering.

1.5 car garage, etobicoke - slatwall, overhead platforms, polyaspartic floor coating, shelves bike racks - before

Another scenario is when the drywall installation doesn’t cover as many walls as you want or is damaged in one or more areas.  When this is the situation, you can choose to install drywall over any other areas you want as well as replacing or patching any damaged drywall.  One thing to keep in mind with new drywall installation is that the building code requires newly installed drywall to be at least 5/8 inch think and fire retardant.  After the correct drywall is installed, the same “mudding” process, sanding and painting procedures needs to be completed.

Once you have addressed the drywall in your garage, now you will want to consider painting.  Of course, if your garage walls are drywall, they will have been painted as explained above.  But what about exposed concrete or exposed brick walls?  You will be pleased to learn that both of these garage wall surfaces are prime candidates for a new coat of paint.  There are combination paints that serve as both a sealant and paint. We’re experts at making your garage interior match your home’s exterior as well as garage flooring, so whether you already have garage flooring or coloured cabinets, we can recommend colours which will make your garage match the rest of your home when the door is open and being enjoyed by your entire family during the warmer months.

T8 LED tube light

Lighting is the third area I’d like to discuss when considering finishing touches for your garage. The typical garage lighting is modest at best.  Often times, there are either one or two incandescent fixtures with a single bulb.  While that may be all right for the builder, it may not look so good once you refinish your garage. In fact, most people who choose to transform their garage use this opportunity to upgrade their garage lighting.

There are three popular options available to you when you decide to upgrade your garage lighting. Your first option and the most popular choice is replacing the incandescent fixtures with LED lighting fixtures.  LED’s have exploded in popularity and dropped in price. They consume far less energy, put out more light, last a lifetime, have controls over the color temperature, and come in a variety of very attractive fixtures. Fluorescent bulbs are still a good option, but one precaution to be aware of is to make sure your fixture includes T8 rated bulbs.  The ‘T8’ rating indicates those bulbs are designed to work in colder temperatures. Fluorescent tubes do go out and have to be disposed of carefully as many contain elements that are not appropriate for regular landfills. LED lighting is the fast and economical upgrade recommendation to your existing garage lighting.

On the other hand, the alternate lighting option is to install recessed lighting or what the home builders refer to as “pot lighting”.  Recessed lighting or pot lights need an opening or recess to accommodate the new fixtures and is most commonly found in garages with finished ceilings or often, under our custom overhead storage platforms where we again have the space to recess the pot lights and run the electrical wiring.

Next month, we’ll review additional finishing options such as baseboards, casings and doors.

Tips to Storing Holiday Decorations in Your Garage

January 20, 2020 by R. Scully

Christmas tree and lights

The holiday season has come to an end, and you may have already started taking your decorations down, but can’t seem to organize them just right. Clients in Greater Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, Oshawa, Barrie, and Guelph can benefit from learning a few of our simple holiday decorations storage hacks.

It may be tempting to pack things away in a rush and simply putting them anywhere, but think about this time next year! You’re going to have a much tougher time finding and unraveling everything if you’re not organized from the get-go.

Make your holiday packing and unpacking a breeze with some of these helpful storage tips.

Take The Time To Come Up With A Holiday Decorations Storage Plan

Putting some prior thought into how and where you are going to fit all your decorations will save you lots of time and hassle!

Garages are probably the best place you store your holiday decor, so you may want to maneuver things a bit if you have a lot of items already stored.

Make a section of the garage for just your holiday decorations and be sure it is easy to access. That way, in 11 or so months, you won’t be climbing over boxes to get to them and potentially hurting yourself.

Use Plastic Storage Bins And Overhead Racks

Plastic storage bins are the perfect place for ornaments, stockings, and  garlands among other items. Not only are they affordable, but they can be stacked easily and save you tons of space. They’re also not a fire hazard.

Using a clear container over a solid one will also help you easily identify what’s in the box so that you’re prepared for the coming year.

Overhead racks are also a huge space saver if you don’t have many shelves in your garage. With overhead racks, you won’t have to worry about heavy items taking up space on the floor of your garage. The space can instead be used for parking or storing items you use more regularly.

Use Clear Plastic Bags And Cups For Your Ornaments

Using clear resealable bags will make it easy to color coordinate your ornaments. You can also use leftover plastic cups to store your more elaborate, fragile ornaments so that they don’t get ruined. It might also help you bubble wrap them to prevent them from breaking.

Label Your Storage Bins

Garage with stored items

Labelling your storage bins will make things much easier when it comes time to put decorations up again. You’ll know where everything is and don’t have to worry about rummaging through tons of boxes.

Shrink Wrap Your Artificial Tree

Not only does shrink wrapping your tree save space, but it will also prevent your artificial tree from collecting dust while it’s stored for months at a time. When you’re ready to take it out again, cut open the shrink wrap with scissors and fluff up the branches. Your tree will be good as new!

Wrap Lights In Cardboard

Using a few square pieces of disposable cardboard to wrap your tree lights in will help to keep them organized and detangled.

Additional Tips for Holiday Decorations Storage

Here are a few final helpful tips to help make your holiday storing a breeze:

  • Use bubble wrap or decoration storage containers (avoid using newspaper as the ink tends to rub off on the ornaments)
  • Use dividers for fragile decorations or even egg cartons that are then stored in plastic boxes
  • Prevent tangles in lights by using discarded wrapping paper tubes
  • Donate any decorations you haven’t used in a while so you don’t accumulate things
  • List out any decorations that are broken so you can buy new ones next year

Signs You Need to Insulate Your Garage

January 20, 2020 by R. Scully

man in garage with stored belongings

If someone were to ask you what the most important room in a home is, what would you tell them? The living room? The master bedroom? Believe it or not, it’s your garage. But, do you need garage insulation?

It may be for cars and storage, but think about it –– the garage is essentially the very front entrance of a home! Keeping your garage insulated is more important than you might think.

Homeowners living in Greater Toronto, including Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, Oshawa, Barrie, and Guelph should look to the team at Garage Tailors Garage for all their insulation needs. Here are some common questions from those homeowners looking to insulate their garages and why you should invest in it.

Why Is The Garage Such A Fundamental Part Of The Home?

It’s much more than just a place to park your car and store your belongings. People nowadays often view their garage as an extension of their home. Maybe it’s where you have your very own home gym or a place you use as a workshop for your creative projects.

Whatever it may be, it’s important to keep your garage insulated. Blocking out air that seeps into your garage is vital to keeping indoor temperatures at a comfortable level in any season. With an insulated garage, temperatures will stay similar to what you have in your home.

It’s a pain to have to listen to the garage door open and close throughout the day. Or maybe your partner or child is working on a project that requires using noisy tools and lots of thrashing. Luckily, insulation acts as a sound barrier so you won’t have to worry about these noises while you’re enjoying your favorite TV show.

What Happens In A Garage That’s Uninsulated And Unattached?

Even though the shared wall that’s between your garage and home is usually insulated, it only keeps the air out when the access door is shut. Any time you open the door, you’re letting out the precious air you use to keep your home at the perfect temperature. Save money in the long run and invest in garage insulation.

Are There Any Other Options?

You may not mind having a cold or humid garage when the seasons change, but if you have plumbing running through the garage, you have no other option –– insulation is necessary. Maybe you have a washer/dryer installed in the garage? With an uninsulated garage, you run the risk of dealing with frozen pipes during the winter months.

Is there a bedroom just above your garage? If so, you will need to make sure insulation runs over the ceiling as well. Without proper insulation, it’ll be very difficult to keep that room warm.

Are My Belongings At Risk In An Uninsulated Garage?

contractors insulating a garage

If you use your garage as a place to store your belongings, such as bikes, skis, kayaks, etc. then you will want to invest in proper insulation. During summer months, garages become humid and humidity breeds rust and mold. Save yourself the worry and cost in the long run and invest in insulation from the get-go.

What About Carbon Monoxide?

Most people use remote starters for their cars during the winter. If you start your car while it’s tucked away in the garage, carbon monoxide fumes can make their way into your home. And if your garage is well insulated, you won’t have to worry about the fumes.

In case your garage is attached to your home, it might be wise to install carbon monoxide detectors close to the door that leads to your garage.

Top Tips to Keep Your Garage Safe and Secure

December 12, 2019 by R. Scully

Always make your garage safe against burglars

How do you keep your garage safe? When considering home security, garage safety is often overlooked. This can become a problem because it is one of the most vulnerable home security areas. Items inside the garage – lawnmowers, cars, and power tools – are tempting to thieves. And once an intruder enters your garage, they can gain easier access to the rest of your home.

Are Your Garage Safety Measures Protecting Your Home and Family?

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Try these top tips to secure your garage.

Have a security system installed. A security system in your garage is your best line of defense. If an intruder tries to enter your garage when your system is activated, the alarm will sound, and emergency services will be dispatched.

When it comes to choosing the right security provider, there are many things to consider. Motion sensor detector can make your garage safe

Keep your windows obscured. Cover any windows in the garage with curtains or blinds so potential burglars can’t window shop. If that isn’t possible, apply an opaque or translucent film to the glass. This lets light in but prevents others from seeing inside.

Enhance your garage safety with motion detector lights. Upgrade your current light fixtures in and around the garage to motion detector lights. These detectors are infrared waves that will detect moving objects and body temperature. When warm objects, like cars, people, and animals are detected a light turns on and stays on for a predetermined time then shuts offs, unless motion is detected.

Things To Consider In Keeping Your Garage Safe

Safeguard the garage door. The door that leads into your home from the garage should be as secure as all your other external doors. You want to stop any possible intruders from making it any farther into your home if they do make it into your garage. Be sure that your garage door locks securely. This can be accomplished by adding a deadbolt, installing more than one lock, or using padlocks that require a programmed entry code.

Don’t leave your garage remote in the car. You can avoid giving an intruder easy access to your garage by taking the remote with you, whether you’re headed into the office or parked in the driveway for the night. Don’t leave your garage door opener remote in the car, even when it’s parked in the garage. You can purchase a small keychain remote to replace your big remote.

Utilize timers. When your garage door is inadvertently left open, it’s an open invitation for anyone to enter. To enforce your garage safety, install a timer that tells your garage door opener to close the door after a set amount of time.

Consider Inside Hazards As Well

Hang items securely on the wall. Get wall storage racks that let you hang – and secure – tools and other items so they don’t fall. Securely hanging items such garden tools means it won’t be a tripping hazard. If you have chemicals that could be harmful to kids or pets, get a cabinet or other garage storage options to keep it locked away.

Fall Garage Storage Tips with Winter Around the Corner

September 24, 2019 by R. Scully

As winter approaches, the annual ritual of preparing your home for the colder weather is underway. In addition to changing filters and maintaining equipment, winter storage of items used during the spring and summer also need to be addressed. Today we’re sharing some fall storage tips to get your garage ready for winter.

For most homeowners, the garage is typically the main area for winter storage.

Taking a proactive approach to your garage’s winter storage considerations will prepare you for the colder months. In addition, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits when the warmer weather returns.

Is Your Garage Ready for Winter Storage?

These 6 fall storage tips will help you prepare your garage for winter.

  1. Declutter your garage. Organizing your garage and keeping it that way requires you to declutter the space regularly. As a rule, it should be your very first task when it comes to your fall garage storage preparations.
  2. Cleanse your garage floor. Your fall storage tasks in the garage should include ensuring that the space is clean and as free of dirt, grime, and dust as possible.

Installing garage flooring that is durable and resilient can help cut down on the amount of cleaning required.

Maximize the use of your garage wall and relax

  1. Make better use of your garage’s wall space. One of the most underutilized areas in garages for storage is its walls. Floor clutter is probably the main thing that’s keeping you from using your garage for parking. Recouping that precious floor space in your garage will be particularly appreciated during the cold weather. You won’t need to de-ice your windows or brush snow off your vehicles, and they will warm up quicker.

Adding a slatwall storage system to your garage walls will make it much easier to maintain an organized garage. The panels offer flexible storage for all of your garden tools.

  1. Prepare your equipment and tools for winter storage. Taking care when storing your lawn equipment, tools, and patio furniture for the winter will extend their life. And by spring, they’ll be ready to use right away.
  2. Use your vertical space. The vertical space in garages is rarely used as it could or should be. Fix that and find more fall storage space with the addition of specialty overhead racks to store your seasonal and bulkier items. Many homeowners in colder climates own an extra set of tires for their car. If you have a second set of tires, consider adding a wall-mounted tire rack to your garage.
  3. Consider adding extra storage solutions with garage cabinetry. This addition helps you make the most of your garage’s storage space and can be especially valuable when it comes to finding extra fall storage space for your belongings.

Top Storage Tips for Your Garage

July 11, 2019 by Rick Scully

garage door brick stone home

A garage can be a great asset when the storage potential is maximized. But it can quickly become a danger zone when you store the wrong things. Today’s blog is outlining what you should and should not store in your garage to keep it safe and accessible.

3 Types of Things Not to Store in Your Garage

Let’s begin by going over the top 3 things that are not good selections for garage storage.

1. Objects that are sensitive to changes in temperature. Most garages aren’t entirely climate-controlled, which means that anything you keep in there has to have the ability to withstand changes in temperature throughout the year.

Some of these items include:

Paint: Extreme cold and heat will make it either too thick or too watery.

Wine: Changing temperatures can cause corks to expand and contract, which allows air to seep into the bottle and contaminate the contents.

Wooden furniture: Wood that’s exposed to excessive moisture can warp, rot, and crack over time.

Important Documents and Photographs: These items can be damaged when stored in places that tend to get very humid.

Electronics: Computers, DVD players, and Televisions can be damaged by intense cold or heat.

2. Hazardous materials. Propane gas should never be stored inside a garage, as a single spark could set it – and your house – on fire. Some dangerous materials can be kept in your garage with proper precautions in place.

3. Items that could attract pests. Pests like mice, possums, insects, and bats can easily get in. Avoid keeping food – including birdseed and pet food – in your garage so they don’t attract pests.

3 Types of Things That are Perfect for Garage Storage

There are plenty of things that are perfect for garage storage.

1. Your vehicle and accompanying supplies. Garages are meant to keep your vehicle (or vehicles) protected against the elements and for storing other car-related items such as wiper fluid, roof racks, and tire inflators.

2. Gardening supplies. Most of the tools used for gardening are safe to store in the garage. This includes items like flowerpots, manure, gardening soil, fertilizers, shovels, and equipment like weed whackers and lawnmowers.

3. Items designed for outdoor recreational use. Patio furniture, bikes, sports equipment, and outdoor children’s toys are all ideal items to keep in the garage. This will protect them from rain, snow, and wind damage. Keeping them in the garage also means that they’ll be easy to access when you want to take them out.

How to Turn Your Garage into a Customized Workshop

June 24, 2019 by Rick Scully

Customized Garage Workshop

Many people love the idea of setting up a workshop inside their garage, and for a variety of reasons. For one, you don’t have to be a dedicated do-it-yourselfer or a professional woodworker to enjoy a garage workshop.

A workshop in the garage can serve a variety of purposes. It’s also a great place to go when things get a little too loud inside the house. Today’s blog offers tips regarding how to turn your garage into a workshop you’ll love.

Determine the floor plan.

The first thing to do when planning a workshop is to measure the floor space so you’re sure about how much room you have before separating the work area into separate sections.

Position your workbench along a wall that has a convenient electrical outlet. Be sure to leave plenty of room to comfortably move around in front of the workbench. With a smaller garage, you may want to look into buying a smaller workbench, because if it’s too big it can overwhelm the space.

You also need to decide where you want to keep your tools. Some people prefer a tool chest with wheels so it can be moved to wherever they need it. Others choose to install cabinets over the workbench for easy access to what they need.

Next, create an area for any other equipment you have, such as a jigsaw or table saw. There also needs to be space for large garbage cans, a wet/dry vac, and a wood storage rack, if you’re planning to work with wood. Make it your goal to arrange a workshop that has everything you need, including adequate breathing room.

Let there be light.

Your workshop should have plenty of light so you can work there any time of the day or night. If you install cabinets over your workbench, you can install lighting underneath them. This helps when working on repair projects that require you to see the smallest screws and springs inside an appliance.

Some people opt for battery-powered LED lights that can easily be attached to the bottom of a cabinet.

Have a seat.

Select a stool that is made of solid material and make sure to measure how high the workbench is, so it is neither too low or too high. You preferably want a stool that permits you to sit comfortably for long periods of time. Look for a stool that has an adjustable height mechanism, some padding and maybe even a backrest so you can lean back when you need to

Sports Equipment Storage Ideas You Need

June 7, 2019 by Rick Scully

A CreditCards.com survey found that people spent more than $100 billion over the past year on sporting events, athletic equipment and gym memberships. At the top of that list is $56 billion spent attending sporting events, $33 billion on sports equipment and $19 billion in gym memberships.

That’s an unbelievable amount of sports equipment! And if your family is involved in sports, chances are that you see proof of it throughout the house and garage, scattered everywhere.

Custom Storage Solutions for Your Sports Equipment

Regardless of how many sports your family is involved in, you probably need help with managing all their equipment needs, from golf tees to bicycles and surfboards. By utilizing a combination of adjustable shelves, specialty accessories, and storage cabinets, you can take control of the mess!

Attachable accessories let you reconfigure your storage anytime you need.

One great way to organize and store sports equipment is with wall hanging storage slatwall panels. They can be tailored to fit anywhere and hold anything! You’ll be shocked at how much equipment can be stored vertically in a small space.

Panels can be cut to fit over workbenches, behind doors, in corner spaces – just about anywhere there is wall space that is being unused. Baskets, shelves, and specialty hooks allow for small and large pieces of equipment to be stored safely.

And as the seasonal sports change, you can easily reorganize your equipment storage to keep the current sports equipment accessible.

Store bikes for safety and easy accessibility.

Storing your bikes can take up a lot of space and, of course, you want them stored where they won’t be damaged. Wheel mounts allow you to store multiple bikes vertically and alongside each other without getting tangled up. Using overhead space to store bikes frees up the floor space.

Utilize vertical space with open shelves and cabinets.

Cabinets are available multiple door heights – 3” is the most common one for tools as they lay flat and are easy to access when you pull out the drawer.

The cabinets are made of either steel or laminate, and the doors for the steel cabinets are either silver powder coated or stainless, while the laminate cabinets come in many different colors. Ceiling-to-floor cabinets that have adjustable shelves can house any equipment behind closed doors. Open shelves and panels provide quick access, making it easy to store and retrieve equipment.

A custom storage design opens up endless possibilities for relieving the chaos in your garage. We love bringing order out of chaos and confusion, so call us today or visit our website to schedule a free in-home consultation. While on our site, be sure to check out our transformations page.

5 Steps to Clean and Organize Your Garage This Summer

June 7, 2019 by Rick Scully

The warmer, longer days of summer are upon us, and it’s the perfect time for undertaking organization projects that require being outside. Did you know that 50% of homeowners say that the most unorganized part of their home is the garage? If you have a garage, now is the perfect time to spend some time cleaning and organizing it.

Today we’re sharing some basic tips to clean and organize your garage from start to finish.

  1. Empty your garage.

Completely emptying a garage is not always the first thing that comes to mind when you’re getting organized. While it might seem far easier to just clean around the items in your garage, emptying it will be extremely helpful when you begin the organization process.

After you’ve taken everything out, dust and sweep the entire garage. When you are finished cleaning, you’ll have a blank slate for creating an organization strategy. This can help you visualize new ways to add storage using different options for hooks, shelving and more.

Take this opportunity to decide which items you really need, and which you can donate or discard.

  1. Make zones.

When your garage is clutter-free, create a map of the floorplan. If you are thinking about adding built-in storage or shelves, be sure to measure the length of your walls and make note of where your windows are. Also, measure the height of your garage from ceiling to floor. You can then use the inventory of the items you’ll be keeping and design zones to classify related.

  1. Utilize the ceilings and walls.

Adding hanging cabinets or shelves to an empty wall will help keep you organized.  Using the measurements you took will determine the length of the shelves or the size of the cabinets that can fit in a certain place. Consider utilizing the height of your garage to include loft storage areas. By stowing some items near the ceiling, they will be out of the way yet easily accessible when you need them.

  1. Add built-in storage and racks.

Placing things like lawn equipment and bikes on racks is a simple way to keep them from seeming like useless clutter. Racks can also help organize items because you can hang related items on the same rack. Cabinets that are built-in can also be used to shelter items that you don’t want to be exposed.

  1. Create sections and add labels.

Label any containers and boxes with a concise description of the contents.  Store them with the labels facing outward and keep all related items in their predetermined zone. These labels are not only useful for organizing the items you currently have, but they will be helpful for future storage.

If you’re looking for a better way to organize your garage, contact our renovation specialists today to schedule a complimentary in-home consultation.  We’ll help you get the most out of your garage space with our innovative solutions.

Preparing Seedlings for the Spring Garden

March 12, 2019 by Rick Scully

With the Spring Equinox on March 20, 2019, it gets us thinking of spring and the warmer weather ahead including sunshine and being outdoors in our gardens. As an enthusiastic gardener, you may be thinking whether you can start with planting seeds at this time of year.  If you want to start your plants from seeds and grow your own organic vegetables or herbs, starting seedlings now is a great idea.  Indoors somewhere or in the garage would be some ideal locations for seedlings.

Depending on how many seedlings you’ll be starting, either a workspace in the garage or multiple slatwall shelves will do the trick.  This will keep the seedlings safely off the ground with a workbench or workspace to do transplanting as the seedlings take off and need to be transplanted into a large pot.

Choosing Seedlings to Start in March

There are a variety of seedlings which can be started in March so that they will be ready to plant in the garden by May.  Here some seedlings which you might consider for the Southern Ontario climate in March.

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery (April)
  • Leeks
  • Lettuce (April)
  • Pac choi & choi sum (April – cover well)

  • Spinach (April)
  • Tomatos (April)

With this variety of vegetables, one or two of your favourites are probably among these options.  If so, it’s time to investigate starting a seedling system in your garage.

Containers for Seedlings

Seedlings need a lot of water as it grows.  To grow seedlings, using paper containers is often the best way to grow seedlings.  The containers will then biodegrade as the seedling needs to be transplanted into larger spaces.  Use a clear plastic covering to keep the evaporation of water low and to speed the germination of your seedlings while providing some extra warmth.  Seedlings seem to do best when they receive a lot of water.

A couple of dry days and your seedling efforts will be for nothing.  It’s best to water your seedlings from both above and below. The condensation on the plastic covering helps prevent the escape of moisture from above while the condensation on the plastic covering will return some of the moisture back to the seedlings.  Keep water available in the tray below the containers so that the seedling containers can soak water into the soil from below the seeds and remain moist at all times.

You can make your own containers using old newspaper which easily soak in water from below.  These can be placed in plastic trays lined with a layer of water.  Another alternative is to buy a reusable seedling system.  These systems often come with watering systems built-in to help make sure that the soil is constantly moist. And, it may come with clear covers so the seeds are kept warm and visible. They can be used year after year instead leaving containers which may need to be tossed due to cracking or breaking.

Use a Homemade Liquid Fertilizer and Good Composting

Homemade liquid fertilizers are inexpensive and faster acting than some of the store bought fertilizer.  Some of the things which can be used include fresh grass clippings steeped with equal amounts of water for 3 days.  Seaweed can be used after it has been steeped for 3 days.  And, urine with 20 parts of water can also be used as a liquid fertilizer.

Seedlings will need a little of this diluted liquid fertilizer twice a week to start. As time goes on, they may only need some fertilizer once every 7 to 10 days.  Once you’ve added the fertilizer, if the plant starts to darken its leaves and growth, you’ll know that your seedling needed the fertilizer.  If you don’t see any change, try lengthening the time between fertilizer feedings.

If you have a heated compost which reached 150 °F and killed off bacteria or a vermicompost with beneficial disease-fighting microbes at about 15% of the mix with soil, helps the germination process and has been shown in a study to do better than just soil alone.  Seedlings are delicate so healthy soils and fertilizers with beneficial microbes will help them germinate into stronger plants before they get transplanted outdoors.

Lighting and Warmth

As the seedlings break through the top of the soil, they will now need a lot of light and warmth.  Standard fluorescent lights which are placed slightly above the seedlings would be ideal.  The slatwall shelving system would be ideal for both mounting the lights and adjusting the height of the lighting relative to the height of the new growth from the seeds.  When the lights are just slightly above the height of the plant, there is enough warmth from the lighting to keep the seedlings warm.  Using a timer, you can make sure that the plants receive 12 – 15 hours of light per day during these early days.

Most seedlings could use a differential in temperature of 10°C between the day and the night.  If the garage is still a bit on the cold side during the night, use some heavy clear plastic to create an insulating barrier around each shelf.

As the seedlings start to grow in height, you’ll want to re-adjust the height of your shelves so they have more room to grow.  The slatwall organization system and the shelving offers the flexibility to change the height between shelves quite quickly.  The sturdy construction of the slatwall shelves and their mounting mechanisms allows it to hold even larger pots of heavy soil so as your seedling and soil requirements expand, your slatwall will be able to accommodate the growing weight demands of your growing garden.

Use an electrical source which has been installed to building code standards to provide a power source for your fluorescent lighting.  During a garage renovation, not only can storage and workspace be created but adequate electrical supply and water supply can be made available to suit the family’s interests in gardening or other creative tasks.  Garage storage and workspace solutions are available to suit a wide range of family lifestyles, hobbies and past times.  The various rigours of gardening systems are no different in their demand for a space that can accommodate the various needs of your new plants.

Learn about the Germination Period of Your Favourite Garden Plants

In order to have a successful garden in the spring, timing is everything.  Plants have various germination periods from 4 weeks to 11 or 12 weeks before they will be ready for the outdoor garden.  And, the various climates from Southern Ontario to Northern Ontario will also affect the length and timing of these germination periods.

If you know neighbours who are avid gardeners, they may be able to give you a hint regarding some of the plants that you may have in common.  Join gardening clubs in the neighbourhood or online so you can ask questions and get valuable hints and tips about your favourite vegetable crop or perennials.  Timing the growth of seedlings and assuring a good germination period for them before they go outside can have a significant impact on the bounty you’ll get to enjoy as they ripen or become ready to pick.

Gardening in Your Garage

Not only is the garage a great place to start your garden, but it makes it easy for you to get your saplings out to the yard for planting.  With a polyaspartic garage floor, small spills and mishaps are not a big deal and any water spills can be easily mopped dry.  When spring finally arrives, you’ll be able to swap out seedling trays when they have been planted in the garden for slatwall space to hang garden tools and supplies which you’ll want to use regularly to tend to your garden throughout the growing season.

If your passion is the garden, we can help you make the most of your garage renovation to include work space as well garage storage space for your most valuable tools and growing systems.
