Tips to Storing Holiday Decorations in Your Garage

January 20, 2020 by R. Scully

Christmas tree and lights

The holiday season has come to an end, and you may have already started taking your decorations down, but can’t seem to organize them just right. Clients in Greater Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, Oshawa, Barrie, and Guelph can benefit from learning a few of our simple holiday decorations storage hacks.

It may be tempting to pack things away in a rush and simply putting them anywhere, but think about this time next year! You’re going to have a much tougher time finding and unraveling everything if you’re not organized from the get-go.

Make your holiday packing and unpacking a breeze with some of these helpful storage tips.

Take The Time To Come Up With A Holiday Decorations Storage Plan

Putting some prior thought into how and where you are going to fit all your decorations will save you lots of time and hassle!

Garages are probably the best place you store your holiday decor, so you may want to maneuver things a bit if you have a lot of items already stored.

Make a section of the garage for just your holiday decorations and be sure it is easy to access. That way, in 11 or so months, you won’t be climbing over boxes to get to them and potentially hurting yourself.

Use Plastic Storage Bins And Overhead Racks

Plastic storage bins are the perfect place for ornaments, stockings, and  garlands among other items. Not only are they affordable, but they can be stacked easily and save you tons of space. They’re also not a fire hazard.

Using a clear container over a solid one will also help you easily identify what’s in the box so that you’re prepared for the coming year.

Overhead racks are also a huge space saver if you don’t have many shelves in your garage. With overhead racks, you won’t have to worry about heavy items taking up space on the floor of your garage. The space can instead be used for parking or storing items you use more regularly.

Use Clear Plastic Bags And Cups For Your Ornaments

Using clear resealable bags will make it easy to color coordinate your ornaments. You can also use leftover plastic cups to store your more elaborate, fragile ornaments so that they don’t get ruined. It might also help you bubble wrap them to prevent them from breaking.

Label Your Storage Bins

Garage with stored items

Labelling your storage bins will make things much easier when it comes time to put decorations up again. You’ll know where everything is and don’t have to worry about rummaging through tons of boxes.

Shrink Wrap Your Artificial Tree

Not only does shrink wrapping your tree save space, but it will also prevent your artificial tree from collecting dust while it’s stored for months at a time. When you’re ready to take it out again, cut open the shrink wrap with scissors and fluff up the branches. Your tree will be good as new!

Wrap Lights In Cardboard

Using a few square pieces of disposable cardboard to wrap your tree lights in will help to keep them organized and detangled.

Additional Tips for Holiday Decorations Storage

Here are a few final helpful tips to help make your holiday storing a breeze:

  • Use bubble wrap or decoration storage containers (avoid using newspaper as the ink tends to rub off on the ornaments)
  • Use dividers for fragile decorations or even egg cartons that are then stored in plastic boxes
  • Prevent tangles in lights by using discarded wrapping paper tubes
  • Donate any decorations you haven’t used in a while so you don’t accumulate things
  • List out any decorations that are broken so you can buy new ones next year

Signs You Need to Insulate Your Garage

January 20, 2020 by R. Scully

man in garage with stored belongings

If someone were to ask you what the most important room in a home is, what would you tell them? The living room? The master bedroom? Believe it or not, it’s your garage. But, do you need garage insulation?

It may be for cars and storage, but think about it –– the garage is essentially the very front entrance of a home! Keeping your garage insulated is more important than you might think.

Homeowners living in Greater Toronto, including Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, Oshawa, Barrie, and Guelph should look to the team at Garage Tailors Garage for all their insulation needs. Here are some common questions from those homeowners looking to insulate their garages and why you should invest in it.

Why Is The Garage Such A Fundamental Part Of The Home?

It’s much more than just a place to park your car and store your belongings. People nowadays often view their garage as an extension of their home. Maybe it’s where you have your very own home gym or a place you use as a workshop for your creative projects.

Whatever it may be, it’s important to keep your garage insulated. Blocking out air that seeps into your garage is vital to keeping indoor temperatures at a comfortable level in any season. With an insulated garage, temperatures will stay similar to what you have in your home.

It’s a pain to have to listen to the garage door open and close throughout the day. Or maybe your partner or child is working on a project that requires using noisy tools and lots of thrashing. Luckily, insulation acts as a sound barrier so you won’t have to worry about these noises while you’re enjoying your favorite TV show.

What Happens In A Garage That’s Uninsulated And Unattached?

Even though the shared wall that’s between your garage and home is usually insulated, it only keeps the air out when the access door is shut. Any time you open the door, you’re letting out the precious air you use to keep your home at the perfect temperature. Save money in the long run and invest in garage insulation.

Are There Any Other Options?

You may not mind having a cold or humid garage when the seasons change, but if you have plumbing running through the garage, you have no other option –– insulation is necessary. Maybe you have a washer/dryer installed in the garage? With an uninsulated garage, you run the risk of dealing with frozen pipes during the winter months.

Is there a bedroom just above your garage? If so, you will need to make sure insulation runs over the ceiling as well. Without proper insulation, it’ll be very difficult to keep that room warm.

Are My Belongings At Risk In An Uninsulated Garage?

If you use your garage as a place to store your belongings, such as bikes, skis, kayaks, etc. then you will want to invest in proper insulation. During summer months, garages become humid and humidity breeds rust and mold. Save yourself the worry and cost in the long run and invest in insulation from the get-go.

What About Carbon Monoxide?

Most people use remote starters for their cars during the winter. If you start your car while it’s tucked away in the garage, carbon monoxide fumes can make their way into your home. And if your garage is well insulated, you won’t have to worry about the fumes.

In case your garage is attached to your home, it might be wise to install carbon monoxide detectors close to the door that leads to your garage.

Top Tips to Keep Your Garage Safe and Secure

December 12, 2019 by R. Scully

Always make your garage safe against burglars

How do you keep your garage safe? When considering home security, garage safety is often overlooked. This can become a problem because it is one of the most vulnerable home security areas. Items inside the garage – lawnmowers, cars, and power tools – are tempting to thieves. And once an intruder enters your garage, they can gain easier access to the rest of your home.

Are Your Garage Safety Measures Protecting Your Home and Family?

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Try these top tips to secure your garage.

Have a security system installed. A security system in your garage is your best line of defense. If an intruder tries to enter your garage when your system is activated, the alarm will sound, and emergency services will be dispatched.

When it comes to choosing the right security provider, there are many things to consider. Motion sensor detector can make your garage safe

Keep your windows obscured. Cover any windows in the garage with curtains or blinds so potential burglars can’t window shop. If that isn’t possible, apply an opaque or translucent film to the glass. This lets light in but prevents others from seeing inside.

Enhance your garage safety with motion detector lights. Upgrade your current light fixtures in and around the garage to motion detector lights. These detectors are infrared waves that will detect moving objects and body temperature. When warm objects, like cars, people, and animals are detected a light turns on and stays on for a predetermined time then shuts offs, unless motion is detected.

Things To Consider In Keeping Your Garage Safe

Safeguard the garage door. The door that leads into your home from the garage should be as secure as all your other external doors. You want to stop any possible intruders from making it any farther into your home if they do make it into your garage. Be sure that your garage door locks securely. This can be accomplished by adding a deadbolt, installing more than one lock, or using padlocks that require a programmed entry code.

Don’t leave your garage remote in the car. You can avoid giving an intruder easy access to your garage by taking the remote with you, whether you’re headed into the office or parked in the driveway for the night. Don’t leave your garage door opener remote in the car, even when it’s parked in the garage. You can purchase a small keychain remote to replace your big remote.

Utilize timers. When your garage door is inadvertently left open, it’s an open invitation for anyone to enter. To enforce your garage safety, install a timer that tells your garage door opener to close the door after a set amount of time.

Consider Inside Hazards As Well

Hang items securely on the wall. Get wall storage racks that let you hang – and secure – tools and other items so they don’t fall. Securely hanging items such garden tools means it won’t be a tripping hazard. If you have chemicals that could be harmful to kids or pets, get a cabinet or other garage storage options to keep it locked away.

Fall Garage Storage Tips with Winter Around the Corner

September 24, 2019 by R. Scully

As winter approaches, the annual ritual of preparing your home for the colder weather is underway. In addition to changing filters and maintaining equipment, winter storage of items used during the spring and summer also need to be addressed. Today we’re sharing some fall storage tips to get your garage ready for winter.

For most homeowners, the garage is typically the main area for winter storage.

Taking a proactive approach to your garage’s winter storage considerations will prepare you for the colder months. In addition, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits when the warmer weather returns.

Is Your Garage Ready for Winter Storage?

These 6 fall storage tips will help you prepare your garage for winter.

  1. Declutter your garage. Organizing your garage and keeping it that way requires you to declutter the space regularly. As a rule, it should be your very first task when it comes to your fall garage storage preparations.
  2. Cleanse your garage floor. Your fall storage tasks in the garage should include ensuring that the space is clean and as free of dirt, grime, and dust as possible.

Installing garage flooring that is durable and resilient can help cut down on the amount of cleaning required.

Maximize the use of your garage wall and relax

  1. Make better use of your garage’s wall space. One of the most underutilized areas in garages for storage is its walls. Floor clutter is probably the main thing that’s keeping you from using your garage for parking. Recouping that precious floor space in your garage will be particularly appreciated during the cold weather. You won’t need to de-ice your windows or brush snow off your vehicles, and they will warm up quicker.

Adding a slatwall storage system to your garage walls will make it much easier to maintain an organized garage. The panels offer flexible storage for all of your garden tools.

  1. Prepare your equipment and tools for winter storage. Taking care when storing your lawn equipment, tools, and patio furniture for the winter will extend their life. And by spring, they’ll be ready to use right away.
  2. Use your vertical space. The vertical space in garages is rarely used as it could or should be. Fix that and find more fall storage space with the addition of specialty overhead racks to store your seasonal and bulkier items. Many homeowners in colder climates own an extra set of tires for their car. If you have a second set of tires, consider adding a wall-mounted tire rack to your garage.
  3. Consider adding extra storage solutions with garage cabinetry. This addition helps you make the most of your garage’s storage space and can be especially valuable when it comes to finding extra fall storage space for your belongings.

Top 7 Garage Wall Storage Tips to Remove Clutter

September 17, 2019 by R. Scully

Having too much clutter in the garage really hinders your ability to use your garage for what it was intended for. Garage wall storage tips will eliminate this problem. By taking a smart approach to maintaining your garage, and efficient storage systems, clutter will be a thing of the past.

Using even just a few of these garage wall storage tricks will pay off instantly and make your garage space more functional, safer, and tidier.

Garage Wall Storage Ideas

  1. Make the most of your wall storage. One of the main ways to keep your garage floor free of clutter is to utilize an area of your garage that’s mostly underused. There are two main choices on selecting a wall storage system – pegboard and slatwall panels (or slatboard). Slatwall storage gives you the flexibility to create a place for any item that is hangable.
  2. Make a place for every item. One of the key benefits of using a good wall storage system is that you can create a space for anything that can be hung up. This leaves everything visible, easy to find, and makes it substantially easier to keep your garage organized. Hanging tools like pruners, hedge trimmers, shovels, and rakes on your garage walls is safer than keeping them on the floor.
  3. Label everything. Some homeowners outline the things they hang on their garage walls with a black marker. Others use paint to remind them where they were stored.

Neatly printed labels that have a similar look also help lessen visual clutter and encourage good organization.

Vital Tips For Garage Wall Storage

Use the right hanging accessories

  1. Choose storage that is flexible to change. Your garage storage requirements will change over time. That’s why choosing a wall storage system that is flexible is so important. You need to be able to move items easily and have the items you use most as reachable as possible.
  2. Utilize the right accessories. A large part of making sure that your storage system has enough flexibility lies with the types of hanging accessories that are available to go with it. Look for a storage system with several hanging accessories that are suitable for your storage needs.
  3. Look for stability. For safety reasons, both the surface that the items are being suspended on and the accessories you’re using need to be reliable and sturdy. Slatwall hanging accessories are attached over a larger surface of the panels to deliver more stability.
  4. Use common sense. Common sense will direct you to look at different garage storage ideas for items that aren’t suitable for wall storage. Large items like seasonal tools, patio furniture, and decorations can be stored in overhead storage racks.

Regaining your garage floor space is as easy as using the right wall storage system. Schedule your free in-home consultation with one of Garage TailorsGarage’s design experts to begin the process. 5 Things To Consider When Redesigning Your Garage

September 17, 2019 by R. Scully

Many of the things we do in life have an impact on our homes as our living space adapts to meet our needs. Things like redesigning your garage may come to mind. For instance, if someone in the house is learning to drive, they’ll either be thinking about buying their own car or sharing the family vehicle.

Important Things To Consider When Redesigning Your Garage

Remove cluttering materials in your garageIn either case, you’ll need an uncluttered and organized space to park, if you don’t want to park on the street (and incur greater insurance costs). Contrary to what some believe, garages don’t have to be cobwebbed, gloomy corners of the house.

If you’re thinking of redesigning your garage, here are five things to keep in mind.

  1. Consider a new garage door. Why not give your house a facelift with a new garage door? With the safer and stronger doors available today, there are numerous options to choose from that are not only beautiful but also effectively protect the contents inside from the elements outside.
  2. Lay some new flooring. Flexible tiles that interlock come in a variety of designs and colors and are slip-resistant. They’re easy to fit – just cut to shape, slide into place and secure with the tap of a mallet.

They’re also more resilient to leaks and comfortable underfoot, making them just the right flooring for your garage. Other available options include rollout flooring mats or stains/paints that can be applied directly to the concrete floor.

Things To Remove And Install When Redesigning Your Garage

  1. Clear the clutter by utilizing clever storage. Use all of the space in your garage by using every wall in the room. Add in a workbench with a slat wall to hang any accessories and tools or put a large storage system in place that will hide any unattractive clutter.
  2. To escape the gloom, install new lighting. If you’ll be using your garage for DIY projects too, mount long strips of fluorescent lighting to ensure that the whole room is well lit. On the other hand, if you’ll only be using the garage to store your vehicles and want something a little less harsh on the eye, consider installing ceiling spotlights.
  3. Have some fun! The garage is an extension of your house, so feel free to add some personality! Consider installing a sound system, dartboard or a fridge for extra food and drink storage during the holidays.
