- Installed 4’x 8′ steel ceiling storage unit over garage door in one bay to allow for additional storage space
- Constructed rear wall storage units to house blue boxes and gardening and car supplies
- Installed automated bike lift to get all 5 bikes off the floor
- Applied 3′ band of slatwall around garage perimeter for slat wall to allow for hanging storage of all tools and sports equipment (snow shoes, golf clubs, hockey equipment) with lockable hooks and baskets,
- Applied pvc floor tiles in black, red and beige
- Installed “punched” aluminum baseboard and caulked wall/floor joint to provide water seal while giving a “finished” look
- Finished underside of platform in white laminate and painted trim red to blend with red in floor
- Both cars now fit into garage

Transformation Story:
This family found themselves in a situation likely familiar to most homeowners. They had moved into the house and spent the first year or so focusing on the inside and ignored the garage. It became the disorganized repository for all things that didn’t have a specific place to live.
They are an active couple with teenaged sons. Items stored in the garage included gardening tools, seasonal items, car accessories, bicycles, and sports equipment (including golf clubs and lots of smelly hockey gear). But the big problem was they had accumulated so much stuff that there was no room for their cars.
Everything needed to get off the floor and organized. As with most newly built homes, the garage had been dry walled but left unfinished. So our goal was to finish the space, incorporate plenty of storage and get the cars off the driveway and into the garage where they belong.
Colour can make a big impact on the overall look of a garage reno. We used red, black and beige pvc floor tiles and carried this colour scheme throughout the garage as accents. This, along with the punched aluminum baseboards, helps to unify the space and give it a more finished look.
The garage has very high 13-foot ceilings, which is ideal for overhead storage. We constructed an overhead platform to store seasonal items and other gear that doesn’t need to be accessed frequently. We finished the underside the platform in white laminate and painted the trim red to coordinate with the floor. There was also room to install a steel storage unit over the garage door. The high ceilings also allowed for an automated bike lift to easily hoist the five family bikes up and down.
A custom-built storage unit on the rear wall of the garage provides convenient storage for blue boxes and ample room to keep gardening and car supplies neat and organized. A three-foot band of slatwall on the walls of the garage provides spots for lockable hooks and baskets to store tools and sports equipment, including room to allow that smelly hockey equipment to air out properly.
It’s amazing what you can fit into a garage with a little planning and custom-built storage to use all the available space.
