Each garage has storage challenges that are as varied and unique as the families who use them. Big box store storage solutions, like modular shelving and cabinets, are designed to fit typical storage spaces. Unfortunately, off-the-shelf solutions don’t always work for challenging spaces in a garage. Tight spaces, irregularly-shaped spaces, recessed walls, wall obstructions, tall spaces and unattractive spaces all create special challenges that are best remedied using made-to-measure solutions.
Garage Tailors specializes in creating storage solutions designed to fit your unique lifestyle. We create made-to-measure solutions to maximize the capacity of your available storage space, despite its unique challenges. Here are few common garage storage challenges and the made-to-measure storage solutions we’ve created to make our clients’ space work.
Tight Spaces
A narrow, one-car garage has a limited amount of storage space, due to its size. However, unique structural elements can also constrict available storage space. Tight storage spaces seldom accommodate standard-sized shelving or cabinets. These obstacles can be easily overcome with made-to-measure solutions, like shelving and platforms.
The storage space in a small, single-car garage can be increased through the use of a wall storage system. Corresponding shelves, baskets and hooks provide storage for several items in the same wall space that previously stored one or two items propped against a wall. Bicycles, scooters and other sporting goods can be stored flat along a side or back wall. Made-to-measure shelves and platforms also maximize the available space in small garages and tight corners. Sliding cabinet doors allow the space to be accessed, without the additional space typically required to accommodate the opening of cabinet doors.
With a bit of creative design and a few made-to-measure storage solutions, we made space for a client who is a bicycle enthusiast to store seven bicycles in a small, one-car garage, and still have room to park the vehicle. By constructing a made-to-measure, foldaway workspace, we were also able to deliver another item on the client’s wish list—a dedicated space to perform routine bike maintenance.
Irregular Spaces
Oddly-configured spaces can create storage dilemmas. Angled spaces, curved walls or“dead” space under a landing of stairs seldom lend themselves to out-of-the-box storage solutions. However, our made-to-measure solutions embrace structural challenges to maximize storage space. Garage Tailors recognizes the storage opportunities irregular spaces create. For instance, dead space underneath stairs can be converted to specialized storage space for tools, sporting goods or seasonal items.
Recessed Walls
Recessed walls make it difficult to utilize standard shelving or wall organizer systems. However, these indentions create the perfect place for built-in shelving and cabinetry. Garage Tailors makes recessed spaces work for our clients by building made-to-measure shelves and cabinetry designed specifically for the space.
Tall spaces
Overhead space in a garage is often overlooked. However, it is a viable storage option for items that are light, bulky and seldom accessed, likeseasonal decorations and off-season sporting goods. Properly utilizing overhead storage space greatly increases the storage capacity of a garage. Overhead storage platforms, secured to the ceiling, have a weight capacity of up to 700 pounds, making them ideal for storing boxes and other large, bulky items. Kayaks, canoes and rooftop sports equipment carriers can also be stored overhead on metal or made-to-measure wooden platforms. Garage Tailors also creates custom-built slings to store such items overhead while making them easily accessible when needed. Bicycle lifts provide overhead storage for bicycles. Take advantage of the full height of the ceiling with a pulley lift. For lower ceilings, choose an option that will store bicycles flat against the ceiling.
A mezzanine built on the back wall or over the garage door creates a second tier of storage space in garages at least 14-feet high. This walkable overhead storage space runs the width of the garage, providing lots of additional space for storing light, bulky items, like seasonal decorations and off-season toys and sporting goods. The space can be accessed via an attic ladder, elevating staircase or various other means.
Unattractive Spaces
Perhaps there are areas of your garage you’d rather keep under wraps, like electrical boxes and the central vacuum. At Garage Tailors we do made-to-measure, custom solutions to mask unsightly features of your garage. Modular or custom-built cabinetry can be used to hide such items. Only you’ll know what’s behind the cabinet door. All anyone else will see is the nice, clean lines of your cabinetry.
Every garage has its storage challenges. Regardless of whether your garage has spaces that are tight, irregular, recessed, tall or unsightly, Garage Tailors can make your unique space work.
